ABERDEEN – A suspicious letter caused a portion of the U.S. Bankruptcy Courthouse in Aberdeen to be shut down for a few hours Tuesday.
According to Inspector Greg Loftin of the U.S. Marshals, powder in a package alerted a mailroom worker around 10:15 a.m.
“People are trained to look for suspicious letters and packages,” said Loftin. “They immediately isolated the person and the package and called for a hazardous materials team.”
While people in the secured area waited about three hours for the haz-mat team to arrive from Jackson, the rest of the Thad Cochran Bankruptcy Building went about their normal daily business. By mid-afternoon, the all clear was given for the building.
“It caused a lot of uproar but, thankfully, it wasn’t anything,” said Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell.
Marshals plan to continue the investigation to determine who sent the package.
