JACKSON – A Clay County man asked the Mississippi Court of Appeals to have his 10-year prison sentence reduced.
Shelby Ray Parham, 48, was indicted on seven charges in April 2004 and pleaded guilty to one county of uttering a forgery. Due to past convictions, he was ruled a habitual criminal and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
In 2009, he argued the court should not have ruled him a habitual criminal and asked that the sentence be reduced. That request was denied. In 2012, he argued that the habitual status was improper and the 10-year sentence was illegal.
On Tuesday, Judge David Ishee issued an opinion that Parham’s arguments were without merit and affirmed the lower court ruling.
