A Smithville man died Monday as the result of a head injury he suffered in a June 5 accident.
The one-vehicle wreck happened on Parham Store Road a half-mile east of Smithville Road.
According to Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley, Jimmy Cummings, 57, was traveling west on Parham Store Road in a 1991 Jeep and apparently lost control and hit a bridge rail before the vehicle came to a stop in a creek. The wreck was reported at 3:08 p.m. to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, which investigated the accident.
Cummings was airlifted to the North Mississippi Medical Center, where he remained for 10 days. He was pronounced dead at 5:48 p.m. Monday.
According to the accident report, Cummings was not wearing a seatbelt.
Gurley said it’s the first fatality of the year in Monroe County.
