HOLLY SPRINGS – A Marshall County man is being held on a $2 million bond after shooting a Marshall County deputy who was responding to a domestic dispute early Monday morning.

Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson said three deputies responded just after midnight Monday morning to a house on Winding Creek Drive in the Early Grove community, located between Slayden and Lamar on U.S. Highway 72.

According to the sheriff, Mardamiyn Sellers, 36, came out of the trailer with a high-powered rifle.

Deputies asked him to place the weapon on the hood of a truck, which he did.

“He walked out to the gate and was talking with the officers,” said Dickerson. “There was some kind of struggle with one of the officers. Sellers was able to get free, ran back to the truck, got the gun and fired at the officers.”

Sellers was about 60 feet away when he fired, striking K-9 officer Cody Spoon in the arm, possibly shattering bones. Spoon was transported to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis where he underwent surgery Monday morning. A family member said another surgery is expected in the coming days.

“He ran back in the house and we tried to negotiate to get him to come out, but he refused,” said Dickerson.

Officers from neighboring agencies and neighboring states responded to the scene. About 75 officers surrounded the property when members of the DeSoto County SWAT team and a K-9 located Sellers on the back of the property, the rifle within arm’s reach.

“He didn’t respond to the officers’ calls, but when the dog located him, he let us know real quick where he was,” said Dickerson.

Because a Marshall County deputy was shot and an outside agency will investigate the incident, Sellers is being held in the DeSoto County Adult Detention Facility in Hernando.

A spokesman said the sheriff’s department has responded to the Sellers’ residence at least six times in the past six years.
