BALDWYN – More than four dozen firemen from seven fire departments in Lee and Prentiss counties battled hours to get a Baldwyn apartment fire under control.

Baldwyn Fire Chief Jerry Ozbirn said the fire at the Oakview Apartments was reported just after 8 p.m. Tuesday.

“We had six or seven departments respond to help,” said Ozbirn.

Eleven different fire engines and tankers responded to the fire directly across Highway 45 from Baldwyn High School.

“It was completely ablaze through the ceiling and roof when we got here. It looks like a total loss,” Ozbirn said. “Considering the time and distance for all these departments, the fire had large head start.”

By 10 p.m. firemen had contained the fire to just the apartment complex and its six units.

There were no injuries reported, and Ozbirn hopes to learn more Wednesday when investigators can start looking for the cause of the fire.

Ozbirn said the Baldwyn, Pratts-Friendship, Guntown, Saltillo, Cedar Hill, Blacklands, Wheeler and Ingomar fire departments responded.
