TUPELO – A Prentiss County man and his granddaughter died Saturday following a singe-vehicle wreck on the Natchez Trace Parkway.
Park rangers responded just after 12:30 p.m. to milepost 152 near Kosciusko. A 2010 Ford F150 pickup driven by Johnie P. Nichols, age 73, of Booneville, was traveling south when it crossed the center line and struck a bridge abutment. The truck went down the embankment and landed upside down in a rain-swollen creek.
Two passengers, Allen Nichols and his wife Kayla Nichols, managed to crawl from the wreckage. J. Nichols and the 3-year-old girl were unable to escape the truck and likely drowned.
U.S. Park Rangers, Attala and Leake county sheriff’s deputies, Thomastown Volunteer Fire Department and the Attala County medical examiner responded to the scene.
