SHERMAN – Birmingham Ridge VFD Captain Brooks Green said fire on Saturday that destroyed the residence of James and Ida McGlaun was due to an electrical issue.
“From the witnesses’ initial reactions to the fire and the way the kitchen was set up, we’re pretty sure it was an electrical fire that started in the kitchen area,” Green said.
Beyond that, Green said it was impossible to know more specifics, but the fire department is braced for an uptick of fires as the weather gets colder.
“The biggest thing is space heaters,” Green said. “But turning on heat for the first time since last winter, things are going to burn out. Dust collects in fireplaces over the summer, things like that.”
The fire department responded about 4 p.m. Saturday to the fire. The McGlauns didn’t have time to grab any personal belongings before exiting the house after they saw fire coming under the kitchen door.
