TUPELO – A Tupelo police dog that escaped his kennel Sunday evening was found dead Tuesday morning.

Alec, a 10-year-old Belgian Malinois, appeared to have been hit by a car in the Mooreville-Auburn area of Lee County.

The K-9 was spotted running free around 7:30 p.m. Oct. 16. His handler was notified and immediately began a search of the area, along with the Tupelo Police Department and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

While Alec and his handler, Tyler Cook, were involved with the June 18 fatal shooting of Antwun “Ronnie” Shumpert, police say there is no evidence of foul play in the dog’s release from the backyard enclosure.

Tupelo Police Department spokesman Capt. Chuck McDougald said the burial of Alec will be handled privately by the family.

“They lost a member of the family and we are going to give them space to grieve,” said McDougald.
