HOUSTON – A man arrested Monday night was found dead in his cell at the Chickasaw County Jail Tuesday morning.
Chickasaw County Sheriff James Meyers said the man was found unresponsive during a morning breakfast call between 5:30 and 5:45 a.m. Tuesday. He said the name of the man is not being released pending notification of next of kin.
“We have turned this over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and that is standard procedure when you have someone die in your custody,” Meyers said. “An autopsy is also standard procedure and one will be preformed. At this time we believe he died of natural causes.”
Meyers said the man was arrested by the Mississippi Highway Patrol for DUI and other charges and brought to the Chickasaw County Jail.
“We did talk to him as part of regular booking procedures and ask him if he was on any medication or had any medical problems or injuries or anything we needed to know about,” said Meyers. “He appeared to be fine.”
Meyers said the African-American male gave a Woodland address and was placed alone in a cell at the Chickasaw County Jail. Meyers said his death was revealed when breakfast was served to him in his cell and he did not respond.
