TUPELO – The $10 million new Tupelo Police Department building will cost a little less.
The low bid for the copper cable that will supply electricity to the Front Street building was almost $20,000 under the high bid.
Tupelo Water & Light director Johnny Timmons said his department was surprised by the price. Utility Power’s bid was about 25 percent less than the city’s normal supplier so they requested a sample of the roughly 1.5-inch diameter cable from the Decatur, Alabama, bidder.
“We removed the insulation and tested the connection and it worked fine,” Timmons said.
The cost to remove the overhead power lines at the site and install underground service is about $800,000.
